Help inspire future generations with 'Our Future Derby'
-
Connect Derby has teamed up with Learn By Design, an organisation which aims to empower and educate young people, to introduce Our Future Derby, a new project to link primary schools with employers from across the city.
Our Future Derby is a fantastic programme which is working to raise the aspirations of primary school children in the seven most deprived wards in Derby city and educate them about careers and skills.
The project team will be working with 32 schools over the coming year. In order to engage with as many children as possible, they are looking to recruit a diverse range of volunteers from across the local business community who will act as mentors and help break down the stereotypes that are formed very early on about what jobs they could do in the future.
Activities range from ‘What’s my line’ assembly sessions to aspiration workshops and class talks.
Commenting on the Our Future Derby initiative, Ann Bhatti, head of Connect Derby, said:
“This is a fantastic initiative that will really benefit local children and I’d encourage as many local businesses as possible to get involved.
“By showing children that anything is realistically achievable and teaching them about the different kinds of jobs open to them can have a massive impact on their futures.”
Programme director Louise Curd added:
“We’re looking to get as many volunteers as possible from the local business community to support the new Our Future Derby programme.
“Any time that volunteers can spare will be much appreciated and help local children realise the breadth of opportunities open to them in the future.”
